Angry vigilantes have sprung up like mushrooms in India after instances of violence against women (such as rape, molestation, etc.) began rising. The people seemed to have grown tired and restless over the police's alleged incompetence at preventing instances of such crimes.
Suresh Kumar allegedly attempted to rape a teenage girl in Ganganagar, India. He allegedly pushed her towards the wall during which he attempted to force himself inside the girl. Passers-by saw them and immediately sought the help of people nearby. Vigilantes then began pouring in the site of the crime.
The said vigilantes refused to call the authorities so as to surrender Kumar to them. Instead, they dragged him into a community gathering during which they pronounced him guilty immediately. After this, Kumar was dragged to a butcher shop where he was mauled by the vigilantes for an hour or so. Kumar, who was already profusely bleeding at that time, was later on subjected to an even worse punishment after this--his penis was cut off by a meat cleaver and then thrown into the middle of an open road.
Kumar was later on dragged into the street where he was left to die by the vigilantes. He was already in critical condition at that time.
Passers-by were said to have ignored him despite his injuries because of the crime he committed. Having seen his penis lying on the middle of the road, they understood that he had committed a sexual offense.
The treatment and torture of Kumar was condemned by the police authorities immediately. According to them, despite the crime allegedly committed by Kumar, the people cannot go on and begin beating and punishing criminals to death. They added that criminals should be left face the consequences of their acts in accordance with the law. They then appealed to the vigilantes to surrender themselves peacefully and voluntarily before they begin arresting them.
Kumar survived the bloody incident. He was rushed to the hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. The girl allegedly attempted to be raped by Kumar was also given treatment and counselling.
Vigilantism and criminal torture, despite their alleged noble purpose, should cease to exist. Justice should be administered pursuant to the rule of law. Laws should be enforced and implemented by those duly authorized to do the same. There are mechanisms in government that allow for the checking and monitoring of officials in relation to the conduct of their duties, or the lack and/or absence thereof.
